Default More of a Hinderance than doing any good ?

after watching some rally footage etc and experiencing some heat soak of innlet temps stationery etc i thought about this idea, thoughts ?

im wondering if it will stop air getting thru when the car is moving

this is only to cure stationary inlet temps,it does work funny enough but havent been able to drive the car yet but will it hinder the air whilst moving/obstruction i wonder

its not finished by any means, gotta make some brackets up etc and finsih the wiring

it does look funny but if you dont try you dont find out i guess.

im well prepared for the ribbing to take place

Looks like a good idea, nice compact fans hope they are waterproof. Will they spin on their own ie when the car is moving, if so I think you will be ok. This would be good for any sprinters. Where did you source them.

They will be spinning all the time, when the ignition is on,they spin at 2000 rpm.

not thought about the waterproof thing yet !

they are just normal 4" p.c base fans ha ha ha !

it was either them or this

7'' SLIM LINE radiator / Intercooler Fan MR2 Universal on eBay, also Engine Tuning Parts, Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 19-Apr-09 14:37:38 BST)

and i can get the p.c fans for free so thought id start on that option 1st ha ha

cheers

Pointless, soon as you move temps are down within seconds

driving round in a city they stay around 50 in the summer and places like safari parks they rocket so this helps in those situations

dont think they will be any good on to of the IC like that, FLAT4 did something similar on here but he fitted the fans to the bottom of the IC so the that air flow hit the full face of the IC when moving but sucked air through when stationary, just my opinion though!

As long as they're on top they will restrict airflow when moving.
If fitted to bottom they will still restrict airflow, but maybe less.
Pc fans, I'm convinced they'll electrocute in first rainsquall....
Still, if your driving includes a lot of full stops they might help your intake temps.
If you want to be serious with them try to connect them so they only run on standstill or low tps values or something.

Make sure they're actually pulling the air through if on the underside, rather than pushing it back the other way! You may have to flip them over before remounting to the underside!

Do a test first with some smoke, to determine how they should be mounted...

I think it's the the style of driving that's prompted this, ie: razzing away from traffic lights after having been sat still for a while.

Yes, the temps would come down after a few second but by that time the jump off the lights will be finished - a pre-cooled intercooler is what he's after.

Still nuts mind you. Marginal gains at best, I would think. Entertaining for us though!

Do the fans suck or blow?

It would be better to rip the bonnet off completely

I dont see how it'll make a difference top or bottom
...if they interrupt the flow on the top they'll interrupt it on the bottom too - if it cant get out, it cant get in

cheers for all the input.

i wired them up last night and the fans push out a hell of alot of air,i wired 4 up in the end.

they dont sit directly on the intercooler fins, there is 1cm or so gap between fans and fins.

i dont quite get when people say fit at the bottom of the intercooler, its a sealed unit so where would they go on the bottom ?

inlet temps were 54 when parked up after 10 mins or so when ignition was turned on but car didnt move (fans were running) the temps went down to 40 within a minuteso they do work, yes i know driving does the same, but being more and more stuck in traffic etc its gotta give me 0.5 better mpg hasnt it and yes i was bored.

i also fitted some around my brake fluid reservoir and clutch fluid reservoir too much time on my hands i think

cheers

Fit any more and it will take off like a helicopter - you won't need to worry about sitting in traffic then

Delta fans are the ones you want, noisy yes but when you think your average 120mm fan is 50cfm these kick out 252 cfm yes that much.

Im sure they do slow the air down once on the move - just moniter you temps and see what the tradeoff is.

Of course all the FMIC crowd have to put up with 2 great big fans and a radiator blocking its flow ! No wonder they need such big intercoolers

you realise the intake temps are measured at the maf sensor which is pre turbo ?
also the underside of the intercooler is not sealed the air goes right through it
the fans are not going to make a difference - sorry mate
if you want to reduce underbonnet engine bay temps - get a turbo blanket and get that to help
also get some thin cardboard and tape and make a duct as temp fit - then get it made form thin alloy sheeting that takes the intercooler air and dumps the air that has passed through the cooler towards the passengers feet - this will help prevent hot engine bay air heating the intercooler and provide a smooth path of air outthe cooler

not my intake temps bud, the probe is in between the i/c and inlet rubber hose, so the temps are after the turbo/intercooler.

put another 4 on top of the IC but the other way round so they are pushing air though as well

Hope your battery is good. I doubt it will save any fuel because the extra load on the alternator to run the fans will remove any advantage.

well,i have mounted them in place on top of the I/C and to be honest, now the heat has risen today,it was cooler when i tested it, typical, not much use really, i dont mind admitting it sob sob.

3 fitted at the top of the i/c,made them about 3 cm away from the i/c fins, the air is passing thru as if yo put your hand at the bottom of the i/c underneath the air hits your hand,so the air is getting through, just doesnt seem to bring down temps

sob sob
