Default Reading car data

Hi guys can anyone tell me if there is or where to get a program and lead that i can put onto my laptop so that i can plug it into my 01 bugeye and read any fault codes and read the data ?

I use romreader/ecuflash and a obd2-usb lead, I got the vag one,
Very good for logging/monitoring live data, resetting or reading ecu codes etc.

I bought one of these ELM327 USB Fault Code Reader E-OBD-2 Scanner Diagnostic on eBid.net United Kingdom

and used scantool. I think there are better options out there but this has the advantage of being cheap!
