Default Cleaning up block surface (head removal - non Subaru)

I will be removing the head from my 205 GTI soon to renew the valve stem oil seals, and the gasket needs changing anyways I think. I will send the head off to be skimmed at a local engineering firm I hope, but what would i use to clean any muck off of the engine block?

stem seals can be changed in situ on those, so I would explore that unless you really want to change the gasket!

There is a very small amount of mayo in the oil filler cap, I wasn't sure if it was due to sitting around unused for a very loing time, or the HG.

they are pretty common for doing that, I seem to remembe rthe oil filler is on a breather/seperator so it gunges up quite easily, esp in winter.

So hopefully it's just a "feature" then. I haven't actually driven the thing yet so wouldn't be able to tell if there any other symptoms of HG failure.

So how would you suggest changing the seals with the head on?
