Default Head Gaskets - HOW BAD!?

Spent today lifting a mates engine out and splitting it down. Head gaskets on both sides had failed! Coolant was waterfalling out of the exhaust!

My question is - why would the gaskets fail so badly? the were MLS too

Anybody know what heads these are??

If the HG had previously been changed, were the heads skimmed and block deck cleaned up correctly? New head bolts used and torqued correctly?

Heads are version 5/6 STD UK or WRX.

4 Years is along time, plenty of time for abuse overheat and so on.....

Just be sure to have the deck height checked and heads skimmed and pressure tested, install ARP's and MLS correctly, and that's as good as it gets O rings aside.

He's got all that sorted Neil - I might get him to bring it over to you to torque the heads down & time it up!!
