Default MILEAGE NOT RECORDING!

Having just purchased my 1st impreza (classic wrx import) i've noticed that the mileage is not recording. The trip is going round but the total mileage is stuck on 59999km. I thought the mileage seemed low for such an old motor. Does it work off a cable from the gearbox or is it electronic? thanks for any help!

What year is it?
Most imports will come over with relatively low mileage (my 93 wrx came over with 56000 km).
I'm afraid that most probably it's broken, when i had mine stop working i stripped it down to find some of the teeth of the plastic cogs had broken.

hhhmmm, has the mileage been 'corrected'?
If they havnt done it properly it would stick on X9999. I know becuase I 'corrected' mine myself and there is a bit of a trick to it. I say this becuse its too much of a coincidece for it too stop at 59999.

or of course it ould have just packed up. you can rule the cable out if the odometer is working. take it apart and have a look. there not too bad to dismantle.

93-96 wrx clocks are the same ,only problem i can see is the mileage reading (if you care about it that is).
When you strip it down just be careful and remember what bit goes where

thanks a lot for all that. 1 more question, are cam belts to be replaced at every 45,000 and roughly how much does it cost. Do you know if there is a post on here about how to replace them? cheers again.

According to the Subaru service schedule, yes.

Anything from £150-350, depending on garage, etc.
