Default WRX back drone. Help

I have just got my 1995 WRX on the road. i have a droning noise coming from the back end. It get louder the faster you go. it stays constant even when changing gear. I cant tell if its just coming from one side or its central. Would it be the diff or a wheel bearing ? What would be the first thing I should check ?

Wheel bearings normally make a noise when you put a load on them whilst cornering, especially at lower speeds e.g. if a LHS one has gone, it'll whine when turning right. But if it's shot, I'm sure it would make a noise all the time, yes.

If you're saying it's a 'drone', then my money is on the rear diff.

You sure your exhaust isn't contacting the N/S/R driveshaft? When accelerting hard, it can knock against it upon banging through the gears... So if in constant contact, it will invariably make some kind of horrible noise....

I've had issues with worn tires causing a droning noise. Ie it dissapeared when new tires were put on the rear, and the asymetrics on at the minute seem to make more noise on the back than the toyos did.

Good news is that they're very cheap off eBay and are reasonably simple to fit. But you are running a risk that the seller might not send you the one with correct ratio, I suppose.

Your car should be eqipped with a 4.111:1 diff. Might be worthwhile ringing APIDavid - he may have one knocking about, etc. Also find out your gearbox code (should be a stcker on it somewhere) and he'll tell you exactly the correct one that gearbox should be compatible with (as said, if g/b is original, it'll be a 4.111:! job).

Let me know the g/b "TY7..." code and I'll tell you what it should be, if you want?...
