Could be loads of things, especially if you hit it that hard.

I take it the wishbone ball joint was replaced either with the new (secondhand) wishbone, or by itself?

Check
Top mount nuts
Drop links
Anti roll bar bushes
Steering arm and ball joint

Just some of the possibles that could have been damaged when spanking the kerb.

My old 205gti hit a kerb in the snow, bent a rear stub axle, snapped the disc, and trashed the front steering arm ball joint.

Trouble is, things often feel nice and tight but you'll need to jack it up and use a prybar or similar to see if there is any movement at all in bearings/bushings. The more you percevere now, the less it will cost if you decide to take it to a garage.

Hope you find the source soon

Maybe because when you brake the weight of the car is pushing forward hence the loose (knocking) component cant move.

Yeah, exactly that. Everything is put under strain and will bend slightly. This is why the ball joints are ringing alarm bells in my head.

Have you tried to rock the steering wheel from left to right rapidly (engine off/wheels on floor) and listen for knocks etc? That would eliminate a couple of things.

I Wouldn't recomend driving it mate.

I had a escort rs turbo years ago and that started knocking, not long after i pulled out of a juction and the n/s track rod end failed and i was stuck in the middle of the road with both wheels facing inward

Fookin embarrasing
