is it mechanical ie copper tube to the back or electrical ie just wires connected to a oil pressure unit in the bay? when you say not working as in what? no lights no movement of needle? could be a wiring problem ie fuse or just bad earth? check all wiring to and from the unit.

first thing: does the oil LIGHT go out when you start?
....if you dont have a light cos the oil press. adaptor replaced it, then I'd not run the car again until I knew I had oil pressure!

the oil pressure adaptor is on top of the engine kind of underneath the alternator - possibly a T piece for the o.p. light too
check the oil or wired (capillary or electric?) connections from here to the gauge

on starting the engine all the light go out on the dash - the needle usually stayed roughly on 4.5/5 when driving around normally. but since the snow and cold weather the needle stays on 0 - but every now n then could have been driving 10-15mins its flickers to the right up to 5 but then jumps back down to 0 again - im really new to this car and soz but not very mechanically minded

how would i know id the gauge has replaced my oil pressure light ????

Firstly does the oil light come on the dash board when the ignition is switched on and go out when engine is started? If so its connected. Its sounds electrical to be honest. Check the wiring is tight on th sensor/sender. The sender could be on a sandwich plate above the oil filter or sitting somewhere near above the alternator depending on how its been fitted. Normally has two wires on the back of a silver cylinder with a pipe on the other end..

Sounds like a dodgy connection somewhere
