Default CAI filter on a 05 STI, whats needed?

Need a bit of advice on this if you please. Im thinking about getting a CAI kit for my Impreza 05 STI (2ltr), seen a couple from both K&N the Apollo i think and AEM.
Now if I stick to the standard size pipe work am I ok mapping wise?, but if I were to get a larger intake pipe then a re-map should be done.

Basically I dont really want to get it re-mapped, so can I still get a CAI?.
I have read that some good gains can be made from these, guessing only through re-mapping.
I have a Green panel filter in the standard air box now, but want some more under bonnet colour as well as ome more grunt and noise .

Thanks,
Daz.

usually reccomend having the car re-mapped for an induction kit, due to the repositioning of the maf sensor

This is the box of tricks that bolt on the air box as it stands now isn't it?
But some of the filters I have seen accommodate this box, and it bolts pretty much in the same place.

Would the reason for a re-map not be down to the air flow being greater than it was?, rather than the maf moving location?

yes it can be down to greater airflow, if by box you mean maf sensor yes you remove it from your old airbox and mount it in the new pipe. i know when i fitted an aem to mine it had a plastic part fitted to the inside of the tube to keep the airflow measurements within factory spec.

An induction kit really is not the limiting factor in performance upgrade, your original panel filter is perfectly adequate for upto 360 bhp no probs, and if you go higher then consider replacing the panel filter with another panel style filter. The maf is a very sensitive device and fitting an induction kit without a remap is no. You need to ensure the air/fuel mix is correct.

I would get it mapped on safety grounds, if nothing else. See here for some anecdotal evidence of what can happen if CAIKs are not remapped...

...I had the misfortune to pick up No. 2 piston in the bore 11 mls after fitting a cold air kit. Until that time [the company] provided no warnings with their kits and it was not realised in the Subaru community that a rescaling of the MAF sensor or remap were required when a CAK was fitted...

CAIKs flow more air but the MAF voltages would remain unscaled (as if reading the normal, lesser air density), thus, effectively, instructing the ECU to underfuel! Not good.

Some good advice here guys, thanks for that. Ok I shall bear this in mind as to whether I get this done. As per norm it tends to open a bigger can of expensive worms, and one thing leads to another. I shall have a think about my next step.

Thanks again for all the replies
