Default CALLING EVERYONE THAT REBUILD THEIR BLOCK....

ok i'm almost ready to rebuild to block for my engine but i'm badly confused.
i ordered a bottom end rebuild kit (gaskets and seals etc) for engines 1996 on but i cant seem to find where any of them go.

so i ordered another set for the earlier engines and has about double the stuff lol this set seems to be the better kit as i compared some to the block.
but needless to say i dont have a clue where 90% of the things go. can anyone advise me where some or all of them go

or is there any manual/diagrams out there???

any help guys

It may be worth cross-referencing the engine numbers against an accurate source (like the Subaru Impreza FAQ) to find out what block you have. I'm pretty sure that head torque settings (just an example) will vary depending on MY.
You obviously want to rebuild the engine yourself (nowt wrong with that), but I would really gather as much information as possible before you undertake the task. The EJ20 is not "hard" to work on, but then again it's no 1100 Mini.... Close tolerance alloy engines are not sympathetic to mechanic's mistakes.
Also, do a search on here for the Ver 1 and Ver 2 manuals... They were floating around, PM me if you get stuck.

4th picture looks like a lot of early Legacy inner timing cover dust seals and more strangely - cork Sump gasket and paper oil pump gasket which the Impreza's never had fitted.

its replys like this i'm looking for, i wont be using the sump gasket as i have been told they was never fitted from factory, so will be using sealer instead.

but i must say these kits i have fit 1.6 upto 2.0 turbo.

i think i have the most important ones sussed out but many ppl tell me not to use these and buy genuine parts, we sell these brand gaskets all the time at my work and guys i work with seem to think they are good quality.?????

You have answered your own question there adzer - it's a gasket set to cover all engines from a 1.6L N/A to a 2.0L Turbo.
You will end up with a load of seals and O rings which wont be used mate !
Might be worth trying people like API,who will put together a specific engine build gasket/seal kit from OE parts.

I can see all sorts there. Looking at the bottom picture for example, I can see some crankcase dowty seals - they go under the main crankcase bolt heads. There's also a front and rear crank seal there, usually brown colour. There's a water pump seal, the big metal o-rings might be for the cylinder access plugs and then the sump and crankcase use roughly half a dozen different little rubber-o-rings as well. The ones on the bottom right are the sealing strips for the stuff on the front of the engine - the cambelt covers and around the water and oil pumps.

Bin the lot and start again - those after market gasket sets aren't worth a fart and are more trouble than they're worth. Nothing ever quite fits properly.

l know you're a Scotsman Adz, with a Scotsman's reputation to maintain

BUT even Scotsmen don't like spending twice, when it all leaks......
