Chipped piston?

I've been eyeing up an engine for sale, the reason it's out of the engine is that it has a chipped piston.

How would a piston chip? It doesn't look like valves have hit it...

it would only chip if there was an obstruction between the piston and the head, it's more likely to be det i would have though, it's prob been melted!
