Guess it depends on why you're doing it. If you're dropping in a set of forged pistons then usually they come with their own brand new rings anyway don't they?

I believe you will find a lot of after market pistons don't come with rings hence why majority of the guys use the original scoobys, which are apparently very good in standard form. I think CP is one of the manufacturers who do not supply with pistons and Wiesco do.

And i would personally change the rings for the sake of being doubley sure but then that;s just me

As for when you split the block just replace the bearings regardless and i would definitely ensure the crank bearing surfaces are scour free.

Hope that helps

TI was going to change the bearings to be sure and i wanted to check the crank thats the whole reason im splitting the block

as for the rings should i buy them from the makers of the pistons or could i just buy some genuine subaru rings?

Weird. All the forged piston sets I saw when I was looking did come with their own rings. Looking at my Wisecos, they are streets ahead of the Subaru design.

Anyway, if the pistons and rings are OK, and the rings are bedded into the cylinders then surely just keep your old rings and you won't need to run in again.

Well full gasket sets seem incredibly expensive to me and it's easier just to pick what you need. Generally a tube of Threebond 1215 is needed, plus a couple of head gaskets, the rest is just reusable fibre gaskets, metal ones for the exhaust which are fine to be reused and tons of o-rings and stuff which are gonna probably be fine after only 3k miles.

Sure someone will tell me I'm wrong and everything needs to be replaced though.

i don't get your reasoning behind stripping your car. if its knocking you will no about it without stripping it.

regardless if your keeping it drive it until it does actually break then re build it. save in the meantime then buy better stuff when the time comes.

i feel your trying to solve a problem thats not a problem and might not be a problem for a good while.

well you never said your engine was out.

when you have your wheels off do you put wheel bearings in just incase they go soon after.

just gets ridiculous if you think like that. your right your engine could last a month but then it could keep going strong for a year. just never no.

buy a forged engine off someone and just sell your standard one. or do an exchange with a company. saves stripping and re building

Thats the whole point its not a standerd engine its a closed deck with forged rods and pistons so for the sake of a few quid and piece of mind thats why im thinking of splitting it

well you didn't say all that at the start.

well if the block already has all that fitted im pretty sure it will be fine. but at the end of the day only person that can decide that is you as its your money.

you could go in and fit new internals, stupid not to if your going to that effort. then you can sell your second hand forged bits to someone.
