Hks Exhaust vs others

Hks Exhaust vs others
Hello there.
I am looking at getting a performance exhaust for my 1996 sti v5.
Im looking for a quiet option though as im not too keen on motorway journeys with a loud exhaust.
Ive been reading about the hks exhaust that is supposed to be quite quiet.
What recommendations do you guys have for a cat back full system
Many thanks
Dan

1996 STI V5?
Your car is a version 4 STI (not that it makes much difference )
Depends what you want from the exhaust.
I have a Revolution system which gives a nice rumble but ,imo, is quite subtle compared to Blitz or HKS.
There is a fine selection here Impreza exhaust systems, downpipe, centre section decat systems and de-cat, Afterburner, Ninja and Racebox :

Your 'View My Scooby' states 1997.
So in harness with you saying it's a 1996, then you'll have a Version 3 (Sep 1996 to Aug 1997), and not a Version 5 (Sep 98 to Aug 1999).
As for a silent back box, be patient, as I'm sure a lot of others will come-a-flocking with their suggestions . Or you could actually try the 'Search' facility

Thanks for the link.
If the car was early 1997 then it would it be a version 5.
Im sure it is a version 5 because it looks like one.
its on a P reg but its a fresh import.

Use this to determine the correct version
1.Series code G=Impreza S=Forester B=Legacy etc.
2.Body type F=Wagon C=Sedan
3.Engine type 8=2.0L Turbo
4.Year code A=MY93 B=MY94 C=MY95&96 D=MY97 (facelift) E=MY98 F=MY99 G=MY00
5.Number of doors 2=2 door coupe 4=4 door saloon 5=5 door wagon/hatch
6.Model type 8=WRX 7=RA type E=Sti D=Sti Type R & RA
7.Transmission D=5 Speed Manual AWD P=4 Speed Automatic AWD
then compare it to your VIN plate
Anyhoo back tyo your question it all depends on how much you have/want to spend my exhaust cost about £200 (second hand but never fitted) so if you don't want to buy new have a quick gander at the 'For Sale' sections on here

Thats no problem mate
So even if the car is an import, it cant be a version 5 if its on a 'P' plate because the garage I bought it from assures me its a version and it does look one.
Do the version 4's look similar...

I would like as much performance as possible but dont want a really loud exhaust, I know there will be quite a lot of sound no matter what but I have heard a blitz exhaust and its too loud.
I have probably between £500 and £800 to spend

I'm not sure i'm afraid the only positive way is to check the Applied Model Code.
Could also check the ecu number (underneath the passenger footwell ,under a kickplate).
tbh maybe i shouldn't have mentioned it but you still have a 280ps+ car and i think the differences between the 4s and 5s are insignificant.
imo you wont have to spend more than £500 if you post up your general area there may be a Subaru specialist or club meet that you can visit to hear the actual exhausts as no matter what we suggest you may not like the noise

P reg is between Aug 96 and Jul 97, so your car could have just crept onto a v.2... But the odds are that it's a v.3 with the Jap's 'max' of 276bhp!
As myblackwrx says, do you have the VIN's 7-digit Applied model code to hand (on the passenger's front suspension turret)? Post it up and we'll be able to tell you all you need to know!

That's not the Applied Model Code, that's the VIN number
Picture of an example plate is here

That's your vehicle's unique VIN code. We need your car's 'Applied model' code.
Go out to your car... pop the bonnet... look at the passenger's suspension turret... aluminium rectangular plate... black letters 'Applied model'... 7-digit code to the right of this... What is it?

I've got an HKS Super Drager from the cat-back on my 2000 Scooby and the sound is perfect, below 2000rpm you can hardly hear it, just a nice burble. Above that its obviously louder but still a nice sound and not too offensive. I don't drive long distances on the motorway but I could definetley live with the sound if i did. Looks mint too..

I have a magnex exhaust for sale. Quite quiet, and not bad on motorway, I wanted louder, so went for a ninja.
If your interested then i'm looking for around 60quid + 10 for p+p

As black says.
Dan did you realise that you'd got yourself an STi?! Because if not, then awesome - you've got a more desirable car than the WRX - plus the all-important 'kudos' of the STi Shorter gearing, uprated suspension components, tighter tolerences in the engine and probably forged pistons aswell. You'll dig it the most.
Is it Sonic Blue i.e. like the world rally car's colour? Cause if so, you've got the Limited Edition 'V-Limited' to boot!

I'm running a HKS Silent system with sportscat downpipe and compared to all other 3" systems it's quiet. That said, there's still some boom in the cabin on the motorway at 70. For normal driving you still get the burble but it's not as loud as i'd like if I'm honest so may change to another HKS variant. The quality is spot on too, a good choice IMHO.

Yeah I knew I was getting an sti because that what I wanted.
But its white which was also what I was after.
The bloke who sold it to me said it was a version 5 but obviously not. Its got a massive spoiler on it though so im still happy whatever the version to be honest.
Im only 21 though and this is my first turbo car and first subaru so ive got a lot learn.
Many thanks for all your help and input
Much love goodnight

Yeah obviously a previous owner has no doubt put the v.5 or v.6 wing on - a VERY ubiquitous first mod (me included lol).
Very nice car. As you say, outwardly it would look like a v.5 - apart form the front bumper and the v.3/4's flusher grille (assuming the OEM item's are still on it).
My fave is indeed the regular STi Version 5 in Feather White, so you've got something very similar looking to that car. Cushty.
