Looking at 2 blocks with pistons in - one has semi circular cutouts for valves, the other has a recessed 'dented' square in it. Machined cutouts are forged and the other is cast aye?

Depends on what blocks you are looking at eg phase 1 /phase 2.
Square(ish) bowl are used on Versions 3/4/5/6 - you need to see the underside of the crown to see if they are Cast or Forged.
Cut-outs for the valves are found on early Legacy's and Version 7.
Some pics might narrow it down a bit.

One is a v2 CDB with cutouts, another is a V2 WRX with square, and I've also got a P1 with square, which was the one that was confusing me as it looks the same as a v2 wrx (presumably cast)!
