Yeah, 80k miles does seem about the average lifespan of turbos, certainly if let to warm up/cool down correctly and with regular fully synth (or semi synth at worst) oil changes.
That said, and assuming it's still the original item, the TD05H on my 1993 WRX saloon is still going (very) strong after 15 years/97,000m... Pulls brilliantly and doesn't smoke one bit!

I would say 80K is a bit pessimistic, about normal for an 80's Uno Turbo or RS Turbo but a modern turbo on a petrol car should see 120K if not abused from cold (that's about average for a turbo on an Impreza according to Roger Clark Motorsport).
But can anyone beat the turbo on my Berlingo HDi van? 1 bar at 3000rpm and still going strong at 250K miles. And mercilessly thrashed.

Diesle tend to run more boost than gasoline, but have an easier time as they run much cooler.
Tiny TF035 off my Forester (so spinning hard nearly all the time) came off at 95K miles and had NO (and I mean absolutely NONE) play in the shaft at all.
One of the Forester guys with a JDM TD04 hit 200,000 miles with no problems.
