Default Whats the difference

I have been looking round for parts to rebuild the knackered engine I took out of my wagon what do they mean when they refer to the engine as 'closed deck' what different 'decks are there.
I have a EJ20 engine how can I tell which sort of EJ20 I have because the head gasket kits I have been looking at have additional letters

Finally does anyone know where I cant get resonable quality engine components, valves. big end bearings etc etc without going to the main stealer.

There are closed, semi-closed and open deck blocks. Standard EJ20 blocks are open.

When looking at the top (end) of the block a closed deck block will be 'closed-in' around the bore. On an open deck block you can see the cooling channel running around the bore casting, a semi-closed deck will have webs joining the casting on either side of the channel.

If you are going for BIG power (600+bhp?) you really need a closed deck block.

Can't help you on the other question......unless you live in sunny Brisbane.
