Turbos?!?!?
Hi all,
Right big question to all.... can someone explain what all the different Turbo acronyms mean.... I've read all sorts TD05/VF35/etc...etc... that I'm well confused.
Is there a good sticky that explains all the different turbos or which turbos work where and what the expected outputs are....
Cheers all....

No sticky that i'm aware of as such a post would be huge. Andy Forrest has a few descriptions on his site IIRC.

Good idea.... Well I have a standard MY03 STI with PPP. Am looking at getting the SIMTEK with a complete H&S exhaust sytem, Walbro fuel pump, (possible injector changes), and a new turbo.
Car is currently showing 304BHP so will probably look at hitting the big 400.... Big jump I know but its just a figure to aspire to.... Won't be massively upset if I get late 300's...

There are two fairly informative posts here...
VF only (but more descriptive) VF series turbo comparison - The RS Club
VF & TD Subaru Turbo List - NASIOC
Anything off-the-shelf will likely be correct, but hybrids' specifications will probably vary, irrespective of how similar they look on the description, i.e. if buying a turbo from Andy, talk to Andy about suitability .

There are basically two standard bolt on turbos for the Impreza - the TD series made by Mitsubishi and the VF series made by IHI (Hitachi). TD04 have a smaller turbine than TD05. Generally early classics had TD05s with a 90 degree entry and later classics had TD04s which were a smaller, more responsive (but ultimately less powerful) turbo and straight entry on the front (i.e. normal looking). VF turbos were fitted to STi models and varied quite a lot over the years. I know nothing about newage cars but I think they were all fitted with VF turbos.
TD05 variants are still used for 300-400bhp installations nowadays, as they are cheap and easily converted with bigger compressor wheels to flow more air. VFs are AFAIK not so easy to rebuild, although there are hybrids around like the MD321 which are a VF turbine mated with a Garrett compressor.
