Default help with block!

as you know i'm breaking my impreza it is a 1994 jdm wrx that has been running a P1 gearbox, my question is will this block have been modified in some way to fit the gearbox or is there anyway to tell if it's an early block or a late one as it is open deck i think it might be a later block but cannot be sure!
the block crank and pistons are all good and i will be looking to sell it, what i dont want to do is sell it as an early block if it isn't and for the poor sod who buys it to find out it's the wrong one!
thanks for your help!

The block does not need to be modified to accept the P1 box, the later 99 onwards blocks have an 8 bolt bell housing. hope this helps

Yes - it was designed for the earlier box.
Also as answered above - has 8 bellhousing bolts and you can also look at where the waterpump bolts to the block - there is a horizontal coolant tube cast into the block.
Phase 1 and 1.5 blocks were smooth on the casting, whereas the later Phase 2 blocks(rear thrust MY'99 onwards) had fins on the coolant tube casting to aid heat dispersion.

Early EJ22

EJ257 Phase 2

ok thanks guy's and an excellent post Mick

I'm just a little bit confused still!

so are you saying a latter block will work with an earlier box, but not the other war round without modification, once modified to acceppt later box you can fit both type of boxes?
Phew

No modifications necc.
The bellhousing shape is the same on all the blocks and gearbox's,its just the number of retaining bolts which differ - basically you can mix and match engines and gearbox's.

B****y Hell that's a revelation!!

A very well known specialist on here would disagree with you!
I thought the location of the starter motor was the main issue?

Mix and match as Mick says. I've never heard of any starter motor issues. The early 752 boxes are known to be the weakest, the 754s (the 8 bolt ones) a little stronger and the newage 6 speed boxes are the toughest.

Gearbox Modification - Normally just drill and heli-coil the gearbox housing to take the second bolt to hold the starter motor on securely when fitting late box to early block.
Will post some more pics up when i've had a nice cold beer (or 2) if im still capable

Sober enough to operate a keyboard now , so the first pic is a STi Ver.2 RA CDB and the second is a EJ257. The basic shape is the same but you can see the difference on the starter motor location and the amount of bolt holes on the two blocks.

Once the later gearbox is bolted to early block, it leaves you with only one bolt holding the starter motor onto the gearbox.
Thats why you have to mod the gearbox bell-housing by drilling and fitting a helicoil to the gearbox to take a stud or bolt to locate the starter securely to the gearbox.
