Default Rattling! Please help...is it the springs?!?

I spoke to my mate, and basically he said that it could be that where the backbox is bolted to the centre section, the springs that go in between the bolt and nut are missing, which is why there could be squaeking.

Not sure how or why this may be? Could someone explain it to me? What is the purpose of the spring in between the nut and bolt?

If it turns out that this is a problem, then how much do these springs cost and are they readily available?
Please help as would likt to get this sorted before I drive to Wales on Saturday.

Thanks
wiley
