Red face scared now..my mechanic has scared me

ok

the car was not starting properly, litterally would not crank, so changed the obligatory sensors, so now its fine..but upon cold starting the revs stay very low down, 200rpm, then given about 10 15 seconds, climb up to 1100, and then settles down at 800 ish rpms!!

called my mechanic, and he thinks that it may be first signs of head gasket failure..stating that she may be pulling in water at cold start, checked the expansion tank, no bubbles..checked the pipe, it is pressuring no problems, no cream on the oil cap...

at a totall loss!!

MAF?sparks?coil packs?setting on the apexi FC commander?

the car is a 96 wrx..re-mapped with the commender on board

help!!!!...

Why would he do this? Already stated that it has a Power FC. This only works on the standard ECU.

Are you using/losing any water?

started her, up, let the revs build, and disconnected the MAF, car stopped, so the MAF is fecked, but also opened the expansion cap, little water, and chocolate colour gunk...great, head gasket!!

****!!

my mechanic cannot touch the car until next weekend, in the mean time, how much do you think a standard scoob garage should/would/can charge me for it?

The problem could be anything: The so often touted "MAF diconnection - stall" test says nothing about the condition of the sensor.

When you say expansion tank - you sure?? The expansion tank is the little tank by the battery in the right hand inner wing (when facing the engine bay) - the level of that means nothing (unless it is overflowing big style = overheating) - its just an overflow tank and often gunky residue does build up in there. Its filled by the header tank whenever the pressure relief valve in the header tank cap vents off excess pressure.

The header tank (the main one ) is the coolant tank ontop of the engine next alternator - if thats empty and full of gunk, you have a problem.

by the time you get the engine out, heads removed and skimmed, new gasket and fit everything again, you are looking at £700 minimum

personally I would flush out the coolant system first and then refil, then just monitor it see what happens. The car is 12 yrs old so a lot of gunk can accumolate over the years.

car stalling when the maf is disconnected it the correct thing, if it still runs then its faulty as far as i can remember ?

flush coolant, and monitor, coolant temp sensor is a common fault and gives crappy idles when cold from previous experiance.

Yes the car SHOULD stall with the MAF disconnected. Not the other way round! If it continues running then your MAF is fecked.

if you deside to diy it your self.

it wont cost £700 unless you want to do more than just the gaskets
the engine on these cars are very easy to take out. even multi layer gaskets are only around £100 for these cars.

even getting your heads scimmed ain't that exspecive

****...well i am going to flush what ever coolant is left..ran the car till temp, and no hot air came out..this sealant thing, is it any good, or is just a nonsical way of sorting a problem out that will only return?

once professionaly done or done via DIY, chances of it coming back?i know she is an old bird, but what can i say, i love scoobs...right then chaps, you have all been great, what do you chaps think?..shall i try the kalimex stuff first, and then get her checked out by a pro, or just get her checked out..worrying thing is, it must have been quite recent this, i am just worried that i am or possibly even have already doen irrepreble damage to the heads or the pistons!!..

should i leave her alone, until it gets to a garage or top up and drive her?as i said before there is only a little gunk on the lid of the water tank..

ha ha....got a career...a business...a family...and zero time to wipe my asse, let alone lift an engine out!!..

besides, if we all did our own work, how would the economy run, just doing my bit to make the world go round!!

its a nice thought though, i always wanted to do the dirty stuff, but time is not my friend!!

Speak to Andy at Richard Henry Autos, Scooby specialist. They built the Apex V8 powered race Skyline, have just done an engine build on my STi 6, built three dog boxes for us recently etc.

They build Scooby engines day in day out, even the lads there can do them with their eyes shut, let alone Andy.

get a carbon test done on your water/coolent mate.
this should deturmin if the coolent is having contact with gasses ect

but, to be honist. check all the aboth first, before going with the head gasket. could easerly be the idel valve.
mine on the other hand was the headgasket. but there was water to the rear too
