Default Gearbox / Differential? Problem. Please Help

Hello and thanks for having a look at my post.

I have a 2004 WRX with 40000 on the clock owned for 2 1/2 years now. My problem is a whirring noise (that sounds like an old gearbox going fast) coming from around the dashboard / engine area. The noise occurs in any gear and coasting in neutral, is not effected by engine speed , it still makes a sound when the clutch is pressed. I can hear it from about 40mph upwards that gets more high pitched the faster i go. It hasnt done this for too long now but im getting a little worried that something might go badly wrong.

Many thanks if yoiu can help. :-)

Nick.

Question

Does it do it whist stationary, revving the engine or only whilst moving..?

I gather you have checked the oil leveel in the gearbox?

Could be the wrong grade oil in there if its been changed recently.

If the noise continues in nuetral and increases with speed, are you sure its not a wheel bearing?

Hello and thanks for your replies i am really greatful.

The noise only occurs when the car is moving at the speeds shown above. I suppose it could be a wheel bearing , but i havnt heard one sound like that before.

I am going to have my gearbox oil changed tomorrow with 75w-90w semi synthetic gear oil rated GL4 / GL5 and will also get the bearings checked.

I'm hoping that the oil change will make the difference. I will let you know.

Thanks again for your support.

Hello again.

Well i have changed the gearbox oil and the rear diff oil. This had made my gearbox feel like new again which is nice, but it hasnt stopped the noise.

I cant seem to see anything that is obviously wrong. But changing the oils is the limit of my knowledge on the impreza.

I did notice that the noise seemed to be a little louder under braking.

Any further help would be great.

Thanks :-D
