Question Can you tell if it's an STI engine?

Hi Guys,

I am looking at purchasing a replacement engine in my 1998 version 5 sti (big ends )and need to know if there is any way of telling that the engine I am buying is the one the seller says it is, as I have been told that a 1998 sti scoob cannot use an engine from any other year car due to the ecu.

I know sti's have the red manifold etc but is there a way of telling from engine numbers etc if it is the correct engine (as anyone can change the manifold to a red one)?

Thanks
