Did mine at home, cost about 350 for parts. This included headset (but had to buy uprated cometic head gaskets separate), thermostat , waterpump , cambelt and in actual working on the car time probably 20 - 30 hours. Your probably looking at 1k to do in a garage but i'm sure somebody will give you a more accurate quote shortly mate. Just pray your bottom end doesn't go like mine ( lots of £££££ )

I raised the engine so that you can get the heads off easier, so no it doesnt have to come out but i'm sure it would be easier (if your lucky enough to have an engine crane). I think 1k would be a fair price.

Is definately worth having the bottom end checked, head gasket failure is often a sign of bottom end on it's way out, there is no point going through the expense of head gasket, when 3-4 months later the bottom end could go.

API will do head gaskets for £700 plus vat I think which is £822 (mies an STI but think you should have the steel gaskets fitted anyway) .
As above though when mine was done I had some other work carried out as it was on the bench. ACL big ends and mains, rings, uprated clutch, oil pump, lightened flywheel, decat ect.
