cars been rebuilt done 500 odd miles all off boost running in but at cold car seems jerky and hesitant but no CEL shown,so did a check with the black wires showed 22,checked up on JGM site and that said its the knock sensor,a check said its location is under intercooler/inlet in front of the gearbox, took of the ic and theres a location for a bolt but nothin there.Where else can it be and can the car actually run without one fitted cos im stumped
hi mate
Don't get me started with CELs and bloody code 22!! Mine keeps throwing up 22 too, thats '97 import WRX wagon, standard with Vpower AND octane booster and i re-set the ECU. I'm going for MAF sensor first. if its sending an incorrect signal it could be underfueling now and then, which might cause the jerkyness and could certainly lead to knock if it keeps running lean. Maybe something similar with your??
But you say the knock sensor appears to be missing???!! I would think it would go into limp mode... if its gone, replace it! the code 22 might be there because the sensor isn't if you see what i mean!
thats my piece, but i'm new to this game
good luck!

I changed my knock sensor on my old 93 wrx but looking at the engine on my 97 sti its not the same setup as the wrx. On the wrx i could actually see it from looking down on the engine (sort of directly below the Idle Control Valve) and my girlfriend managed to change it with her skinny arms with just pushing the intercooler up a bit to give a bit more elbow room. but as i said the sti has more engine around that area so cant even see it
If i could find my old post about this another poster put a pic of it up, but cant find it.

Depends what year it is I reckon. On a v3/4, you can't just see it. It's hidden under the DV crossover pipe and a load of other plumbing/wiring. Take the inlet manifold off and it's perfectly obvious. At the least, on a v3/4 car, you'd want to take the idle valve off first.
Reset your ECU it may be an old code thats showing. When my knock sensor packed in the CEL light was on. I think the ECU remembers the code untill it is reset.
On a MY97 STI its under the intercooler by the dump valve.
