Default help please with water issues

im having some real issues with my water system, for ages now i have to keep topping up the expansion tank with water every 2 or so runs and were not talking hard runs here, im putting in about 1.5 litres a time.

i noticed today while looking under the car (not getting under it though) i could see a slow drip off water which looked like it was coming out from behind the oil sump. there is no other signs off water leaking anywhere on the engine.

im no expert but also shouldnt the bottom rad pipe be hot as i drove 150 miles today and when i parked up to check the water the pipe was stone cold (i checked straght after turning off engine) the thing is i the thermostat was knackered wouldnt the car overheat rather quickly, it never does overheat though.

any suggestions welcome as im totally stumped

I would check the thermostat same thing happened to my mates RA a couple of weeks ago he changed the thermo and its running sweet now with it not opening its pressurising the system and blowing it back via the overflow not going round the system hence cold bottom rad hose.
