sti version 3 type r
Hya,
Iam in the process of buying a sti version 3 tyype r, I have been told by a good source that these engines are prone to engine detenation. Is this total common knowledge.
Thanks Mark

remap
Get it remapped to UK fuel using a standalone ECU e.g. apexi power fc or simtek as soon as you get it as the oe ecu is mapped very aggressively to jap fuel and yes will detonate and cause serious engine damage !

Hya,
will it detonate, even while driving it normal or just when you put your foot down, its just I pick my car up on saturday and have to drive 200mile to get it home, can I not use v-power and a octane booster?
Thanks Mark

StickyMickys car is a V3 IIRC and that has the OE ECU. Not a Type R though, mind.
The car you're getting Mark, SHOULD, be fine on V-Power. It's the later cars that were mapped on 100ron fuel. V5/6 onwards IIRC.

I have a STI V3 and heard loads of different opinions on what fuel to use, octane booster remaps etc scared the **** out of me
The car I got had some previous history mainly from a guy that did occasional track days and he documented everything, I have receipts for full system with sports cat and a panel filter (no other engine mods) but nothing for a re map or any engine work other than oil changes. These where done with fully synthetic 10w 50 every 3-4K miles.
If it was used on a track it must have been used reasonably hard at some point. and 15k later no problems.
I ran it on Vpower when I was in the UK and here in France I can get 98 Ron anywhere so that’s what it gets but I never put 95ron in it. There is a bottle of octane booster in the glove box which was there when I got it if you get caught short and cant find super +.
From what I found 100 RON wasn't in Japan when STI 3 was out so it shouldn't be mapped for 100 anyway 98-99 at the most so the ECU should be able to cope with UK Vpower no problem.
I reset the ECU to clear all its settings before using the fuel here so it should be able to cope with the fuel ok.
If you drive it very hard all the time or do a track day with it but a bottle of octane booster in to be safe
Main thing is don’t abuse the motor or do daft engine mods without a remap, give it decent oil, allow to warm up cool down etc and it will be reliable.
Take some octane booster with you for the test drive if you are that interested in it and worried it may have 95 in but give it a good thrashing to make sure its ok.

It will be fine on V-Power. If you do get det it will be when you're giving it a foot full.
Car has a built in knock sensor but to be on the safe side fit a knock link. Or as stated an ECU, Apexi or Simtek. Either can be programmed to flash the check engine light when a certain level of det is reached.
