Default Air leak on boost

Morning all..

I have a 1995 wrx wagon... All pipework is standard., I do not have a boost guage.

Anyhow a few weeks ago I was playing about under the bonnet and I noticed the vacume pipe on the DV (Recirc) had come away. so I put this back on and the car was running lovley, boosting fine and pulling strong through the gears.. but suddenly its started to slow down again...

from aroun d 3000rpm there is a whistling thats directly related to how much throttle i give the car.. more throttle, more noise, boost is reduced and the car doesn't pull well at all..

I have an air leak and i can't find it. I assumed it was the vacume pipe agian but no that all seems fine. Can i test the recirc valve is functioning? I plan to strip off all the IC and related pipe work later to have a look but i have no garage and its belting down! Ga

Any other advice would be great,

Cheers

Thats a good thread, cheers mate.. Well I had the IC off tonight with all relevent pipe work.. put it all back together with new jubilee clips and the hissing is still there but car is better..

Took it for a spin and hit boost cut twice. Have reset the ecu and got error code 43, something too do with throttle switch apparantly.. anyhow not too worried about that at moment!

Ill check the boost solenoid tommorow i guess..

Cheers

Yes it should be fine for checking around-a-bout figures.

On the drive into work today it only seems to be doing it in the higher gears.. in first and second its boosts normaly, in third fourth (auto) its starts whistling after 3000rpm..

IS this because its boosting to a higher preasure and overcoming on of my jubilee clips or a crack is opening up at the higher pressure?

Its still doing it after cleaning out the boost solenoid.. Have ordered a load of vacuum hose now so will rule out all my vacuum lines.. Also bought another Dump valve from eblag for a good price so will see if thats at fault! I will get to the bottom of this GRRR

Im still suspecting the turbo to Intercooler pipe has a fracture I can't see.. Any way to test without a spare? and is there a direct replacement available from anywhere, samco for example ? Or is it a dealer only job ?

When i first took the IC of my car, i noticed that the bolts for the Y pipe onto the IC were loose, i have now fitted said Y pipe with sealant so to ensure all is sealed, i also use sealant on the DV when i fit it as well just to make sure of no leaks, and i am very sure i have no leaks from those parts now, might be worth a look?

I replaced the seal on the IC (no y pipe std wrx) with a spare i have.. and im fairly sure thats sealed.. I have a second DV in the post.. Im again fairly sure the hoses in that area are not leaking as the jubilee clips are nice and tight..

Next it to replace vacuum lines and try the new DV (recirc)

Looking into the waste gate actuator route now as well now, will look at that tonight.. Im weary of using silicone sealent on some of the pipework as it can make removing the pipes a bit difficult.. I have already shreded my hands

Also let me get this right... If my boost solenoid is playing up.. could this also have the same effect? and what I can hear is the wastgate venting constantly?

Ok i Hvae reset the ECU (just unplugged it for 20 mins while in work.. Took the car for a spin.. and its now going ok but making a fairly load dump valve (like vta) noise when i snap the throttle shut...

maybe the noise im getting is air being sucked through a hole in the induction side, and then when the DV operates the air being dumped is foced loudly through this same hole on the induction side.. Tie to strip the induction side of pipework down!

Well i replaced the DV with a big bit of steel bar and the car still makes a VTA dump valve noise.. So im guessing my air leak is between the turbo and intercooler.. Which narrows it down a bit..

S i have an old Turbo too intercooler hose (my ld one witha hole) and have plugged up the hole in it using silicone, some rubber hose and some jubilee clips.. it only has to last a 5 min run to pin point my problem.. and if that proves where the leak is then time to find a new intercooler to turbo pipe

it might be an idea, have you had a look around the joins on the pipework, there might be a split underneath a jubilee clamp. another option is to take off the pipes and seal it up and try blowing into one end and seeing if it holds the pressure. Its also possible it might be the intercooler leaking.

I have checked all the joints and they are fine.. I blocked the ic too throttle body and the turbo outlet and blew downt he dump valve hole... and there were no obivous leaks.. Although I couldn't put that much preasure on it..

I have lots of vacuum hose to change out and a spare 'botched' but good turbo to ic pipe.. Hopefully i will get an answer to it tonight

No joy... still leaks air above 3000rpm... Replaced most of the vacuum pipes and checked the ones i couldn't change.

I did notice the pipe that goes from the boost solenoid to the air resentor box had snapped off, Drilled the snapped bit a little larger and stuck the hose in there with some silicone so it nice and solid..

I guess i have to change the IC pipe again now as im thinking it must be that? Whats confusing me most is the VTA dump valve noise im getting...

My recirc dumb valve is working fine as i checked it!

Ordered a new throttle body to intercooler pipe as i suspect this may be at faul (its one of th eonly parts I haven't changed... And is considerably cheaper than a samco turbo to intercooler pipe!

Ok replaced the intercooler to throttle body pipe and still air leaking..

So i pulled the vacume pipe off the turbo outlet and went for a very short spin, hit fuel cut fairly sharpish so its nowt to do with the waste gate.

So far I have changed or ruled out:-
  • Vacume lines
  • Wastegate
  • IC to Throttle body pipe
  • DUmp valve (std)
  • All jubilee clips
  • Not in limp mode (pulled battery lead for a few hours)

I have recently replaced the turbo to IC pipe, but i think this is all that could be left ?

Any comments? opinions? This is reeeaaaallyy dragging one now!

Sounds like Turbo to Intercooler pipe split to me, as they are only rated at 1bar.
Samco do a 2 or 3 piece kit for about £60

Also check the connection to the underside of the intercooler, where the standard pipe fits.

IIRC the Pre96 hose kit you have to cut the standard hose at the intercooler end and jubilee clip the samco to the existing connection/mounting.

Makes the Samco turbo pipe kit I ordered earlier today sound like a good idea then I have a broken hose (went at dv) so I can cut that one up without trashing my exisiting one incase the problem lies elsewhere.

Got it from europerformance for £49 delivered, which is nice

may pick some more jubilee clips up tommorow then.

Cheers

Dont forget the intercooler itself could have a leak somewhere?

just had a simillar problem! i just mixed some fairy liquid and a little water and brushed it on all the intercooler pipe work and fired up the engine.

Seconds later i had loads of bubbles blowing from the pipe that goes to bottom of the intercooler right at the bolted flange.

Resealed it and its sorted!

Past the mot no problem.. Am going to wind the wastgate actuator up about 2 turns to see if maybe its there... It only does it on boost so I can never pin point the problem under the bonnet when its stationary

I did try spraying higly flamable brake cleaner around the pipework, hoping to get a spike in revs if I found the leak, maybe ill try the washing up liquid hehe.. But pipeworks been off so many times in last few weeks that i doubt it to be a connection.. Most pipes have now been rplaced and with all new clips heh!
