Default What causes piston slap and general engine life?

Guys,

I've read a load of stuff about piston slap and bottem end engine failures, particularly on STI cars, but I'm unsure as to what causes these.

Is it a case of poor maintenance, relentless thrashing, wrong fuel used (detonation) etc...?

The reason I ask is I'm looking to come back to the Scooby fold and want to buy a classic STI version V or VI but I'm a little concerned about engine longevity.

I know this is a bit like how long is a piece of string, but on average what mileage do these engines tend to do if serviced according to schedule with a variety of driving (normal use plus some trackdays)?

Sorry for the long post and any info will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt
