Default 280bhp my ****

i bought an engine from a subaru breakers,,he told me it was 280bhp, from an automatic,,,,

now i spent lots of money on parts for to up the power( 20g= 550inj=ecu=fmic=and so on),,,,sent to get her mapped, and all i can get is 280bhp +280torque,,,,,so i think the engine never was anywhere near 280 to start with

But the engine will only have as much power as the mods added to it and the mapping done on it. Unless ofcourse it was never a turbo engine in the first place i guess. Who mapped it? did they give a reason for all these mods only hitting 280

if you only got 280 of each on a 20g turbo ??? its either a dodgy turbo or in the mapping ??

as above or its a fake 20g

its the turbo, injectors, exhaust, inlet,Mapping etc that make the power. The basic engine could have been a 280 version,But fit it in a 220 car with all the 220 ancineries and it will run 220

Im not suggesting you have a 220 car, I merly try to show how a 280 engine may or may not make 280

Yeah you will get 280 from a good td04 so no way a 20g would make that power unless your engine has problems or as mentioned its a fake. Id only ever buy 1 20g and thats from AF and im saving for one atm . Where did you send it for mapping ?

Like has already been said, and engine is just that. It the ancillaries that raise the power.

Where, wheels or flywheel, are you stating the 280/280 from? Might explain something?

'92 wrx (type a) 240ps
'93 wrx (type b) wagon 220 ps auto
'94 wrx sti 250ps
'94 (typeC revision) 260ps
'94 ra 275ps
'95 wrx sti-2 275ps wagon
'96 wrx (wrx ra) 280ps
'96 wrx wagon 240ps
'96 sti 280ps

from what i have experienced of early cars, i believe all auto's (type sa badged) are 220ps from the factory, as the auto's where a post production conversion (ie special order in japan) i'm not sure if i've ever seen a genuine sti auto? (correct me if my info wrong) hope this helps phil.
by the way i drive an auto ,chipped ,exhaust usaul stuff, running 14.5 psi boost,as standard boost map for auto with a factory tdo4 is only 11psi.

Aye, the basic engines are almost the same....its mainly the ECU, turbo and injectors that make the power difference.

Anyway, there is no such thing as a factory 280bhp automatic. Although they can be easily modified to achive it...just fit the mentioned parts off the 280bhp engine.

I reckon the differneces (unless the tuner messed you about) is that engine is now making a SAFE 280bhp on UK fuel, and it may have a wider powerband...i.e it picks up better at low RPM too instead of waiting for at least 3000+rpm for something to happen.

A factory 280bhp RA will not produce a safe 280bhp on UK fuel without the mapping, forget this Vpower nonsense, it still needs to be done. Otherwise engine doesn't last and gives up the ghost, which is why many RAs have had to have their engines rebuilt/replaced (and most when rollered, don't quite produce 280bhp anyway). So, what actually did happen to the old engine?

If you're running your standard management then it wont make a **** of a difference what engine you put in.. you could fit block that was rated to 400bhp to a standard WRX but you wont see 400bhp

dont mater what it should be standard, its what mods have been put on that should give you the figure and on the mods you've put on should be well over 300, sounds like there may be more to it than being said.

you sure it wasn't 280 at the wheels? cos thats prob not far off, if its 28- at the fly then theres something a miss for sure

I wonder if it's running higher compression ratio than the manuals? The wagons often did to give more midrange flexibility. Presumably in the wagon ECUs the timing was pulled at the top end to compensate for the better off boost performance, leading to a lower headline power figure but more midrange urge.

If your auto block had a higher CR which sounds likely, you wouldn't be able to run as much timing or boost with it as a normal manual block. Just a thought.

bend on turbo.. either an early td04 or a td05 turbo.. or an early legacy turbo.. vf something which are small and would cause an issue.

Highest I have seen with a td05 turbo with bend / 90deg entry was 343/343 and td04 around 280mark.. grey are original colour for 380cc standard fit injectors.. not saying you still have them but seems unlikely if grey that they have been changed.

the turbo is a front entry, but i had to fit a 90%bend (samco)as the original was the metal one...i bought the turbo 2nd hand ,,it is meant to bea 20g from ZEN but how can itell? ,,,its definitly a bigger compresor housing, but theres not really any marks or numbers on it to check agianst,,

its easy to tell if its a 20g as the actuator will come right up to the expansion tank

just had a look at the turbo, i can make out 504 on the compresor housing, where the acuater bolts onto it,,the first letter isnt very clear ,but i think its a 5,,,

if i got the inlet pipe from a later model(front entry)what else do i need to fit this ,,think mine is a phase 1-1.5........
