I removed my oil cap earlier and there was a very small amount of
white sludge ( about a thimble full) behind the cap.

Is this the start of HGF???
And if it is can i sort it out if i have caught it in time??

if its gone its gone has to be heads of job. But for a small amount may just be condensation.
Does the car do short journeys? Is the oil changed regularly?

Best thing to do is clean it out and keep your eye on it. Keep a close eye on the coolant and oil levels.

If it hasnt had an oil change in ages then thats worh while to.
