In tests by Prodrive, Scoobymag and our own Harvey Smith on here, the OE paper filter was just as good and occasionally better than most aftermarket filters. The gains are so small the only justification in having one is that they are usually 'lifetime' items as opposed to serviceable, saving a few quid over the years. The air intake on a Scoob is very well designed so improvements are hard to achieve, which is why the PPP doesn't include any intake modifications.

On back to back tests on four pannel filters conducted on two consecutive days, the difference in power output between the "best" and "worst" was less than 2 bhp.
The "best" was a sponge or foam pannel filter that was allowing particles as big as a grain of sand through. The "worst" was the STi replacable pannel filter but it also had the best filtration. There was nothing between the O/E Subaru item or the replacable K+N which comes from K+N lightly oiled. Performance and filtration were similar.
Personally, if it is a car I am going to keep I fit a K+N because with a £10 cleaning kit from Halfords the filter can be cleaned and reused over the life of the car.
Stories of this filter destroying MAF Sensors because of the oil on the filter gause are just that, Scooby Myths in my experience, unless of course the instructions are not read and when the filter is cleaned, it is grossly over oiled.
the 99-00 MAF Sensor is particularly sensative and prone to failure from vibration.
