Unequal headers will release the exhaust gas quicker and so allow the engine to breath more easily. In turn this means more torque, the engine can rev easier without putting itself under as much stress.

Equal lenght are better, but you will lose the Scooby Bubble, and gain more of a motorbike roar. Some like it, some don't.

I've got equal headers and love them.

Unless you are running big power, getting on towards 500 bhp tubular headers are probably not your best option.
Generally tubular headers will move the spool point up the rev band by 150-500 rpm depending on their design and quality of manufacture. Usually the gains are evident at high revs.
Consider a set of ported O/E headers which will reduce the spool point, add torque right across the rev range, add marginally to your boost figure and retain the existing burble.

Got equal length headers on mine and it still has some of the burble but nothing like what it used to. I personally think it sounds good, if not a little loud
