Default apparent ecu upgrade

hi all
iv been told by the man at scoobyclinic that my98 awd turbo has a apexi ecu,on checking this at home i found it looked the same as a standard one, apart from one wire coming out the largest side of the ecu with a female 3.5mm jack on the end
could any one explain what this could be for?is there a chance my standard ecu has something special inside?
also whats the best diagnostics equipment available, thats compatible with a 98 impreza turbo?(assuming the ecu hasnt come out of a refurbed stereo)
thanks all for any info you might have.

you will need to host it on something like imageshack or photobucket (that's what i use), upload your photo to 1 of the websites then you use the 'img code' copy it then put into your post and the image will appear

the controller plugs into the top of the unit and the case is a different shape on the Apexi with the give away word across the front APEXI

iirc that is the same case and same 8S on the cover but the board is different..
sorry if I remember incorrect but your's was the standard yellow socketed 8S.

This is a different board within the original case.. I have not seen one like that tbh.. that is not a GEMs, Link or motec etc..

Very interested to see within the case..
