Default EA 82 timing problem???????

hi all , i'm currently installing a 1.8 turbo ea82 into a volkswagen camper for a friend.

what i need to know is how to set the timing from scratch, as i have just installed 2 new cam belts and marked the top of each pulley before i removed the old.

once this was done i then rotated the crank and can only do so through 180degs.

now we should have checked before hand, we never did a full rotation when we checked the engine to start with. so to eliminate a bottom end problem i would like to set the cams and crank statically and start from top dead on no. 1 if thats how its done.

i know its christmas, but this hippy needs your help.

thanks in advance Mike, and happy christmas to all..
