Default Heavy on petrol any suggestions????

Hi all, just joined up today to the site and I'm well impressed. I have a 04 impreza gx sport auto with 46000 miles and its a lovely drive sticks to the road but i cant keep petrol in it.
I can only get between 200-220 miles per tank Now i dont drive it hard and had it serviced 2 weeks ago. It got an oil filter and 5w30. Plugs were changed before i got it with denso plugs. The air filter was clean. Is there anything i can do or is this normal.

Well that would be worrying fuel economy for a turbo unless it was driven fairly hard all the time, so yes I'd suggest you've got a problem. What it is I don't know, but it doesn't sound right.

There is absolutely no reason why a Boxer should be thirsty, even allowing for it being an auto, thats not right, although 'per tank' depends when you fill up, so why not post MPG for a comparison?

I've only had my turbo a couple of months. I had a sport before and it was SO much better on fuel!!

I get about 250 miles from £55 in the Turbo and I dont have a heavy right foot

Couldn't put it better myself. My dad still wonders why '£20' of petrol doesn't get him as far as it did couple of years ago.

The most accurate way to compare you fuel economy against others is to fill up your car until the pump clicks, then reset your trip meter. You can then fill up again whenever you want - either wait til the light goes on, or half way through the tank, whatever, it doesn't matter. Fill up again right up to the click and look at your trip meter. Then it will tell you conclusively how much petrol you used over how many miles.

My 300bhp turbo does around 16mpg on a long cruise, 24-25mpg in everyday commuting, 20-25 with a mixture of normal and hard driving on the roads, less than 20 on track.

I used to have a 2.0GX Bugeye (now have a 96 sti) and you must remember that it only has a 40 litre fuel tank where as the turbos have 60 litre tanks. The range you quote is about right, if driving really carefully you could get more but best to just accept that if you want better fuel economy an Impreza (turbo or not) is not the car for you.
