water pump fault?
Hi all! It's been a while since my last post,as i sold my car,but am looking at another impreza with a problem.
The car in quesion has an over heating problem, which the owner said is the water pump.
He took the car to a subaru specialist(not sure who) and after a look said it was the pump. Also,it pushes water through the overflow.
It's an interitent fault, sometimes does it straight away, other times not at all.
My fear is it's the head gasket(s),and wondered if a pump could cause these problems? I thought that as the pumps belt driven, other than leaking or seizing,it shouldn't cause over heating.
Many thanks in advance,Tim

Have the cooling system pressure checked and the coolant can be checked for traces of Combustion gas indicating head gasket failure.
As alyn said above - stat or air lock would be most likely.
Pump is belt driven by the cam belt so is turning all the time the engine is running.

i would put money on it NOT being the pump when they are ****ed they leak,
airlock or head gasket (i would say head gasket)

Sounds like head gasket to me, my Dad had a Legacy (2.5l)with a very similar problem, we changed thermostat, checked water pump(they do leak when shagged) but the overheating and loss of coolant still happened, also there were bubbles in the header tank during tick over (this got worse when revving the car), from gases escaping through the head gasket, you could smell exhaust fumes in the coolant, the pressure from the gases forced the coolant out of the system causing the over heating, needless to say he got rid of the car it did have 100k on the clock though.
You made the right decision, and avoided what could have been a big bill.
