My MY98 UK Impreza has started to leak water into the front passenger footwell. Im not 100% sure but I think it may have started after I had a new windscreen fitted. It seems to be dripping out of the heater motor unit and is very visible running down the rubber soundproofing. I noticed it when I lifted the carpet to install some cables.

What is the likelyhood of it being down to the windscreen? Im having it checked out by the windscreen fitter but he says its very rare that leaks develop after fitting a windscreen.

Could the air intake into the heater fan be drawing water in?

Any help much appreciated as this may turn out to be a real pain to fix

Cheers

I wuld look under the bonnet round the windscreen area and check that the run off holes are not full up with crap. When this happens any rain from the screen and roof collects in the pocket there, as the level fills, it will leak down any hole it can to get down, normally it finds an imperfect grommet and flows straight into the footwell.

Bet it's the windscreen!

I had this before on a Honda Civic VTI after a replacement windscreen was fitted. There was a small leak along the side of the screen which leaked water into the passenger footwell. I was really worried when I tried to trace the leak because it appeared to be coming from the heater exchange matrix.

The windscreen fitter found the source of the leak by applying a solution of soapy water to the outside of the screen and blowing compressed air along the inside edge.

Leak = Bubbles!!!

Once the leak was found it was easy to apply more bonding material and fix the leak although in extreme cases I think they have to remove the windscreen and try again.

Cheers, Mark

Unhappy

Gavin, I've had this problem ever since my windscreen was replaced 7 months ago, i wish you luck! Windscreen company took my car away to test and guess what, yes no fault found with seal. Strange they wouldn't test it in front of me. I have had two blown central locking control units due to water ingress and have now relocated the unit to prevent damage. Someone suggested I check the grommet(s) behind the nearside wheelarch liner where there is a cable loom passing through but I cannot find the source of the leak which obviously runs down inside the nearside A pillar. Occasionally the carpet gets slightly wet which worries me as the Link ECU is under there

Hope you get it fixed

Dave (never using Silvershield again)
