Red face 1980 DL 1600 need help with clutch?

Hi i am new to this forum, i have been a VW guy, but now i am the proud owner of a 1980 subaru Dl 1600, this car has sat in a yard/field for the atleast 6 months before i got it, i changed the battery, put some gas in it, used a little starter fluid in the carb, and she fired right up, and almost made it home , the clutch was spongy and releasing realy low, then it got to the point where i it wouldnt go into a gear while the motor was running, with the motor off, it shifted fine, but while it was running it would go into any gear at all, its like the clutch is still gripping and not releasing at all, i just started the car in 2nd gear and left it there and just drove home at 25 mph ive never messed with a hydrolic clutch before, iv always had Old Vws and they have a clutch cable. the only funny thing that i dont uderstand is that, when i was driving it in 2nd gear, i could come to a stop light and push the clutch in, and it would sit there and idle, but if i would have taken it out of gear, it wouldnt have gone back into gear , so if some one can help me figure out what is wrong with my car, thanks alot, i dont have the money to take it to the shop, i know if i can just figure out what it is me and my brother can fix it, well thanks alot

I don't have a clue about this car, but some general engineering advice i can give so.............It might just be worth stripping, cleaning and reassembling, see what that brings you, as long as you rebuild it as it came apart and all is clean/greased where it should be then it may be ok?
Failing that, if you strip it you will see if there are any damaged parts and will be able to replace accordingly

Sorry to not have been much more help!
