Often thought about buying a cheap engine with minimal problems (head gasket example) anfd having a go at it myself, that way if its all a bit much you'll probably find out when stripping it down and only have wasted a few days and £100, rather than having your car in bits and needing to give a mechanic a few grand to put it all back together properly.

There are a good few project threads here and elsewhere of people who have done the same, i am dying to try it but havent got the stones as yet.
I have studied the technical manuals for a while now and hope to give it a shot over the winter, (head gasket probs).
My fav thread on the topic is P1mark on P1WOC,
Prob best that the car isnt your daily driver and you dont need it for a while ... just incase , but if you do go for it, get it up in projects it may inspire others

Good Luck

Been there done that and its the best thing I have ever done.

Once you get over how daunting the task is it isnt that difficult.

A couple of tips:

Pay alot of attention to detail.
Work in a very clean environment
Take your time.
Purchase a workshop manual on CD from Ebay.
Follow my thread in projects. https://www.scoobynet.com/projects-4...ssic-2-0l.html

It started out as a diy 2.0L 450 BHP rebuild.

Now its a 550bhp reversed manifold 2.5 build lol

Here's a pic of the engine currently :

I'm no mechanic or engineering bod, I'm an IT Consultant!!

Just go for it!!!

I'm an office nerd and I done one for friend once, found it very easy & have ended up doing quite a few now, (still sticking to the office work though).

This is my effort, not Quite as good as Dazdavies, But probably just as fast
