Power Steering..... Dead Weight ??
#1
Has anyone driven their car without power steering ? There are a number of FWD/RWD cars around of a similar weight that don't have power assist and the steering is OK.
The reason I ask is that I was looking into the possibility of turning the inlet manifold round 180 Degrees to shorten the length of tubing required to run a FMIC.
It would be great to lose the PS and fit the alternator there.
Also, every 4 kilos = 1 hp on a 1200 kilo scoob !!
Just one of those crazy ideas you have when you should be sleeping I guess !!

Well for one I'd say that the PS rack is a good 10-15kg. No idea what a non-PS rack would weigh. The PS pump, pulleys and piping probably make up another 5kg. Don't forget the drag on the belts as well.
As for driveability, I believe it would be find on the highway but in town or on the track it wouldn't be very fun to drive. For a simulation, try rolling down a hill without your enging running and turn a corner. Not very fun.

With the engine off, you are fighting against the hydraulics in addition to the road. mmmm ? I'd need to drain the oil and remove the belt to try it.
I put a manual rack on my cossie for racing and it was great with loads of feedback at the limit.
It's just that 4wd may give too much feedback ie tug ??

Good point. I did this in my car without an engine and without any hydraulics hooked up. WHY you might ask? Well I pulled the NA 2.5L 165hp engine in favour of a JDM STi engine. Problem is, the engine still isn't rebuilt...

Last time I looked at Pats car he'd turned the inlet manifold round 180 deg - don't know what he did to the PS though...
