Handbrake light is a warning light for the brake fluid level, have you checked the level?
I don't know if bugeyes are the same as classics but on mine the float tends to stick occasionally, remove the lid and free the float.

Yep, same thing on mine the other day after a i changed the pads, the rubber thingy on the inside of the brake oil resevoir had pushed out and was pushing on the float, pushed it back in and job done.
