Usually, on most cars, you start up the engine with the rad cap off (Header tank cap on the impreza) turn heaters fully on hot and the blowers to max, thn let idle till the fans have kicked in twice, after the second time the fan has kicked in put cap back on and switch engine off.

Try 2 avoid reving it after its quite warm, cause the water will just **** outa the header tank.

I've had many differant make of cars now and always filled it the same way. I changed the coolant and flushed the system on my sport wagon last week and had no prolems with air at all.
As stated before, have your heater and blower opn full. Mix your coolant and water first then trickle the water into the radiator slowly using a watering can. By filling slowly you let the air have a chance of getting out past the water/coolant. When you have 1/2 filled the system start the engine and leave on tickover, continue to fill the system slowly untill the coolant is to the top of the rad neck, the pump helps to push the air round and out of the rad. Once filled, top up the expansion tank to max mark and replace both caps. Run the engine till the temperature is at normal.
Carefully remove rad cap and top up and retop up the expansion tank. That normally gets rid of all the air.
