i dont think its the coils as it runs ok its just on hard acceleration which makes me also think it a fuel problem. could it be the maf sensor that is causing it?

I have the same problem in 1st and 2nd gear, on doing a search I found one persons problem went away when they changed the clutch and gearbox. Getting the clutch changed next month so hopefully that will cure it.

Sounds like the MAF sensor. Get a diognostic test before you buy one.
Had a similar problem on mine.

maf sensor on the 96 is rock solid.. under hard acceleration the spark is no strong enough.. if the coil packs have not been changed then 99% that will be the problem.. you can change the plugs and close the gaps slightly and it will be fine for a bit but ultimately the coilpacks need changing

i have a uk wagon and the same happened to me but every time i upped the boost it got worse.
standard you couldnt hardly notice anything.
then z4 ecu and decat it got a bit worse.
then a scott.t chip etc and it was really jerky
changed coil packs and problem solved.
there about £200 so check them properly first but even a very tiny hairline crack will cause the problem.

Get new Spark plugs fella, same thing happened to me and was going to go down the coil pack road but at £200 a set I tried the plugs first.

Been running like a dream ever since.

i did the plugs about a month ago so i dont think it will be that the car has 81k on it now so will look in to coil packs i think. i also fear i may have damaged the maf when i was trying to fit a dump valve is this possiable?

unlikely to damage the 96 maf they are pretty good. the 99 and 00 maf are fairly fragile in comparison.

What plug gaps did you use? might be worth gapping them to 0.6mm which might resolve the problem for a bit

if it was me i would check the coil packs, gap the plugs to 0.6/0.7,clean the boost solenoid (carb cleaner) lots of info and pics on search for boost solenoid, get rid of the dump valve (never had one but them seem to cause alot of cars to have running issues)and get a decat downpipe for lots of nice turbo spool noise instead.
not sure about maf sensor mate you could of damaged it but they are pretty bullet proof compared to other models/years.

if it is the coil packs can you tell there faulty because when the car is colder it runs a bit better, but when up to temperture it is more of a issue?

yeh makes sense that mate just take the rubber end cap off and cheack the plastic for tiny cracks, splits etc, you say you changed the spark plugs not long ago,no offense mate but the coil packs are very brittle items anyway with age and you have to be gentle with them and i know thats not always easy because of how fiddly a job it is to get at them.
i wouldnt be surprised if when you take the rubber end caps off they will fall to bits or have cracks in them.
if they are damaged you can super glue and masking tape them then put the rubber cap back on as a temporary solution until you get some new ones.
