I expect the cable has come loose meaning the ecu will have gone into limp home mode (low boost 0.5bar and will only go to 4500rpm).
This has happened on my 93 wrx when the speedo converter came apart i just replaced it got the ecu cleared and that's it

2nd the above but was 4000 revs and it was convertor the same too

95 import wagon

there is three parts .on a import .cable ,convertor and sensor .lets hope it the cheaper part IE cable or convertor .

easyest way is disconnect from gearbox and see if point is turning in gearbox .if it is add cable part and see if cable turns .if is add convertor and do the same .if all are turning .kiss ya overdraft good bye .

all has to be done with all four wheels of the ground of course

:-)

Would you get the limp home mode problem if the speedo broke on a Version 5 sti (1999) JDM?

second that its a yes to your question.......

i broke my speedo when i was trying to change the face of the speedo, in my fustration trying to put everything back in the small space in the dash i also pulled the speedo cable quite hard........

after buying a new speedo and fitting i was still having the same problem....

brough new speedo cable which comes in two bits and when i tried to fit it i realised the bit that sat inside the gearbox had snapped, once changed had full boost and the speedo worked again

i must stress if you ever take your clocks out make sure you dissconnect the speedo cable where it seperates under the engine near the gear box or due to it being very fragile it will brake.......

first thing check the cable hasnt seperated, then take the gear box end of the cable out and check that it spins ok then check that with the cable unpluged from the speedo the whole cable rotates when one end is rotated....

if all that seems to work then your speedo will be knackered....

brought mine from a breakers yard....

all the best, belive me many cold nights in the dark and months of fustration, i do not envy you LOL
