Default sport bonnet with fmic

Does anyone know how much the 03+ shape steel (?) sport bonnet weighs compared to the aluminium WRX?

Apart from weight, are there any other reasons not to change to a sports bonnet on a FMIC'd WRX?

RCMS do these vents which replace the scoop and let the hot air backwards up the windscreen.

Always an option. Then you get the keep the lightweight ali bonnet.

I did this on an early classic, the main problem is heat, with no vents or scoop the hot air has nowhere to go, it will show any weakness in your cooling system.

Only real solution would be to wrap the turbo (blanket etc) and maybe fit an extra cooling fan on a seperate switch? Oh nad poss an alloy rad too.

Hope this helps

Mike

ah crappiness, that sounds like a lot of work to make the car worse

Never mind, I'll shelve the project now and do something sensible instead

What about removing the seals from the windscreen end of the bonnet to vent the air out? And possibly the seals around the tops of the headlamps?

Also, if the scoop takes air in and then down the back of the gearbox then why would a sport/na bonnet keep heat in? It wasnt getting out of the scoop on the move anyway.

Do the vents on an 03 have the same blocked off panel under them as the classics do? IE, they do nothing to vent heat out?

Just my thoughts thats all.

Wayne.

Surly you done need the scoop when you have a FMIC. When the car is moving I am sure enough air is being moved around the engine bay so as heat build up is kept to a minimum? Most other cars like turbo diesels, skylines, supra TT etc done need scoops?

The scoop will continue to cool the intercooler pipes running into the throttle body so probably worth keeping it.

Worth remembering that when you fit a FMIC it is because you are upping the power so under-bonnet temps will increase so you need to make sure that you can vent that extra heat some way or another

Hmm, but for sleeper value a sports bonnet would be better

I also wonder if the scoop produces aerodynamic drag as well - the car might actually be (albeit only a tiny bit) faster with a flat bonnet.

I've got a turbo blanket, cold air intake and will wrap the fmic pipes, so hopefully it wouldn't contribute to raised intake temps
