Default Got a Prodrive BB - need a quieter one...

HI

I'm running a Prodrive BB (decat centre only as well) but it's a lot louder than I thought it would be.

What quieter BB are there out there (apart from the standard WRX one)?

Anyone interesting in swapping for a Prodrive?

Cheers
Richard.

Although the quality isn't as high I always thought that Magnex Backboxes were pretty quiet....

Will leaving a standard BB hugely restrict the car if I also had a decat downpipe/uppipe?

I also thought that BB only restricted the power when you really up the power say 400+, sure I heard that somewhere. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Someone is bound to swap an original STI one for a PD one. I have a Sports Cat, decat rear and straight through centre and its spot on for my quiet family compromise.

Ah - so STI standard ones are quieter - could be a good route to go.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

They look better than the PD ones too IMHO with the slight slash cut.

Remus! Very quiet, nice sound - no droning at any rpms. Loud enough to cause rised eyebrows on road side inspections, but silent enough to pass their dBA-limits

Might try and see if I can hear any local STI BB's to see if the difference is worth the change.

get a my06 centre section with resonator, that will drop the noise without impacting performance to much. Ultimately you can't have it both ways.

True.

I've still got my resonator in place though - it's a MY01 bugeye I've got and I've only just replaced the cat prior to the down-pipe (if my understanding is right!).

Suprised you find it too loud (fellow !) Scotsman.

I have Prodrive BB, H & S Decat centre (deresonated), Ninja sportscat dp and decat uppipe. I find it "just about right" - perfect with the windows down, could be louder in fact. Keeping pally with the neighbours prevents me doing anything about it !

The Sti bb should be a bit quieter, as above.

HTH,

Andy Mc

Thanks Andy.

I do like the sound - but I find on motorway use it can be a bit droney and I do a lot of business phonecalls on the handsfree kit.

Glad that the Sti bb should be quieter - probably go that route. Also keen to get the down/up pipe decatted at some point and the Sti box might keep the sound to a reasonable level (for me at least!).

My old classic kept the peashooter, whilst had a remap, and I loved it being quiet.

Richard.

To be honest the centre SILENCER (internally its a silencer NOT a resonator which is different) has as much effect on noise as the BB, so I would suggest keeping the PPP BB and swapping back to a stock centre, or even the WRX one which is the same except for having a larger volume silencer.

I had the BB on before I had the replacement centre and I hardly noticed a difference when it was swapped out. It believe it was the midpipe on the diagram below I swapped out -which took away one of the cats but kept the resonator. Didn't realise that that midpipe also worked as a silencer. I think I might swap the BB first - but will ook at that if it's still too loud.

I also found that tubular headers were quieter than the OE cast ones

You could chop and change some bits on my WRX if you like. I'll obviously give you some cash for your bits. Let me know if you're interested.

When referring to Impreza's, depending on teh type the centre section a very small effect on noise. However the MY06 part has a very large silencer which is of a baffled design with resonator chamber too, and makes a good job of cutting a fair bit of noise out. It is totally different to the earlier part, which in turn is different to the (pure) resonator on the classic cars.

The backbox has the single biggest effect on the noise, followed by the downpipe then the centre, although as said, the MY06 centre is very quiet.

above based on messing about with many different types of exhausts and cats, especially at customer MOT time.

Thanks Paul - good advice and I think I'll look for a my06 centre to go with the sti bb. I am unusual in that I like my car quiet

Would there be any problems fitting a my06 centre onto a bugeye system?

Thanks Paul, not seen an 06 on part...

As you say most newage have a SILENCER and not a RESONATOR.
