Tumble valves - what are/were they

I dont have any on mine, but I used to.
Not quite sure what they are, or indeed why you would get rid of them.

The tumble valves are fitted between the inlet manifold and the cylinder heads. Their purpose is to provide turbulence within the intake tract at low air speed to aid the suspension of the fuel, thus allowing a cleaner burn.

From the research I have found on NASIOC, they only matter the first 20 seconds or so after a cold start up for emissions. After that, useless.
