Default Coolant Header Tank Insulation

Just done this today using 2 lots of Carl Davey's spacers. Why 2 lots? To make sure the bolts dont transfer heat to the manifold. Along with the manifold spacers, its a good mod.

I thought Carl sold the nylon spacers that moved the tank away from the manifold..... Carl's Scooby Site Image

However I agree with what you've done as its exactly like mine, when tested with an IR heat gun I found the manifold next to the tank was 20C cooler (and the same temp as the other side) after fitting phenolic spacers, the bot is responsible for about 1/3 of the heat transfer, so as you say pointless doing one side and not the other!

But your bolt is still in contact with the header tank. OK the bolt is steel so it won't conduct as quick as ally to ally, but it will still get there.

If you are going to do it like this, the best way is to drill the holes in the header tank out bigger and make your insulators top hat style.

Still use 2 as you have done, one ushed into the header tank mounting hole from above and then the other below.

If you drill the headers tank mounts out say 4mm bigger, then obviously you will get 2mm radially of insulation between your bolt and tank. There will be no metal to metal contact at all with this arrangement.

The pinpoint contacts of the thread tips will conduct, but not sure for the 1% difference it would make its worth the hassle! If you want to, just wrap the thread in insulating tape or electrical shrink wrap!

You can always relocate to the other side of the Inlet manifold, To the right of the alternator, Assuming you have no Aircon

Had them a while so thats why they are different. I agree about the threads not making too much difference.
