Question Oil cooler and oil filter relocation kit?

Hi all,

Has anyone used one of those kits that gives you an oil cooler but has to relocate the oil filter? Just wonder if they're any good?

Cooler oil!

if you use car on trackdays and the like very handy, but to do a proper oil change the oil needs to be drained from the remote cooler...

Whats the cost of the fleabay ones?

My concern would be that is saving £X a real worthwhile investment in an item that could potentially cost you a great deal more in the long run?

I would stick with just the cooler with quality fittings/take off plate and hose (of sufficient bore) from a known source.

I'm already decided on the route...mocal...as you say, engines aren't worth cost cutting on...

The feebay one is £171 but I have no idea what a mocal one with all fittings costs (yet). Cheers guys

It is one thing I would get done professionally from someone that has the pipe and fittings in stock. The pipes can be tailored to your precise requirements, and not be constrained by not having the right angle on a fwe fittings to get the cooler or filter just where you want.

I don't think you're understanding what's being said. Don't buy a kit, take it to someone that has all the parts and more required to install a bespoke setup, or at least go to somewhere where you can pick parts off the shelf to suit your intended setup. Don't be constrained by having a kit.

Paul, doesn't that normally add to the cost? My days of having endless funds are over and I need to find the cheapest/best quality/value kit without the worries of air bubbles and oil change issues.

mine was fitted by scoobyclinic just after christmas and in the current warmish weather its brought the emps way down

relative cost shouldn't be the deciding factor.

What are your oil temperatures at the moment ? - do you really need an oil cooler?

Mine ventures onto track occasionally and doesnt see above 118C at the point of the sensor, the oil in the sump would be of a lower temperature than this. I havent felt the need to add one yet using Millers 10/60 and very frequent changes. [waits to be told that I need one now ]

I've been running 105 deg when pushing and 110 when really hard but these are for relatively short distances (as you need to slow down on the road or you'll fly off the end of the world at warp speed lol!). I wouldn't want to see 120+ deg and I'm sure I'd get that on a long blast around a track.

Do NOT buy the cheapest kit you can find. Have one setup specifically for your car. Mots will use the same core and take off plates, but its the installation that is worth paying for to get it done right.

£500 seems a little steep though IMO

At 110C - have you really got a problem that needs solving?

Like Pavlo etc has said, I did a lot of reserach into oil cooler kits etc. And found all of tehm to either be way over priced or flawed in some way. So I decided to spec up my own kit, if you are handy with a spanner then go to www.thinkauto.co.uk and call the blokes up and buy all the bits seperate.

otherwise, if you are not convident, then go to a tuner and get one fitted bespoke.

I'm def not going to buy that ebay kit now...I've also read another topic of a guy who bought one and his sandwich plate wouldn't seal to his oil filter (any model inc Subaru OEM). The termostat controlled job sounds excellent but I'll have to delay the project if its going to cost £500...

Does all Mocal sandwich plates come with a thermostat?

You can have a thermostatic sandwich plate that can be used in conjunction with the factory modine oil/water cooler. If you're keeping the Modine though, I've had consistent results just using a regular sandwich plate.

Thanks Chap, as it stands looks like I'm just doing the cooler thermo route first and seeing what that's like.
