Default STi engine into WRX?

Hypothetically speaking, if you get an STi engine from the same age (2004) could you drop it in with say the right dials, and ECU and everything would work... or not?

In theory but the wiring loom would also have some differences.

For the variable valve timing to work you'd have to use the STI ECU as it's not present on WRX.
